Frequently Asked Questions About
Concrete Sidewalks & Walkways
How Much Is My Concrete Sidewalk Going To Cost?
The cost of a concrete sidewalk depends on several factors, including:
-
Length, width, and thickness of the pour
-
Type of finish (broom, exposed aggregate, stamped, etc.)
-
Site access and conditions
-
Base prep requirements (if needed)
On average, concrete sidewalks in the East Kootenays typically range from $15 to $45 per square foot.
Straightforward broom finish sidewalks fall on the lower end, while decorative finishes or complex layouts increase the cost.
We offer free, no-obligation estimates so you’ll know exactly what to expect — with no hidden fees and no pressure.
How Long Will My Sidewalk Installation Take?
Most standard sidewalk installations take 1 to 2 days to complete, depending on the size and site conditions.
-
Day 1: Formwork, base prep (if required), and rebar installation
-
Day 2: Concrete pour and finish
-
Optional Day 3: Final cleanup or sealing prep if needed
After the pour, the concrete will begin curing. We recommend:
-
Walking: Wait at least 24–48 hours
-
Driving (if applicable): Wait 14 days for light vehicle traffic, 28 days for parking
We’ll provide a clear timeline and aftercare instructions based on your specific project.
How Thick Will My Concrete Walkway Be?
Most residential concrete walkways are poured at 4 inches thick, which is ideal for regular foot traffic and light use.
If your walkway will support heavier loads — like utility equipment, trailers, or occasional vehicle traffic — we may recommend increasing the thickness to 5 or 6 inches for added strength and durability.
We’ll assess your specific project needs and ensure the thickness is suitable for long-term performance and stability.
Do You Tie The Rebar?
Yes — we supply, place, and tie all rebar needed for your concrete project.
Rebar reinforcement helps prevent cracking and shifting over time, especially with freeze-thaw cycles or uneven ground. We make sure all rebar is properly spaced, securely tied, and installed to industry standards before we pour your concrete.
Whether it’s a sidewalk, driveway, or slab, you can trust that your concrete is reinforced and built to last.
Do I Need To Seal My Concrete Sidewalk?
Sealing your concrete sidewalk is highly recommended, especially in the East Kootenays where freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing products can wear down the surface over time.
A good sealer helps protect against:
-
Moisture penetration
-
Surface scaling and flaking
-
Salt and stain damage
-
UV-related discoloration
We offer sealing as an optional service after the concrete has cured (typically after 28 days). If you choose to handle sealing yourself, we’re happy to provide guidance on when and how to do it properly.
Sealing your sidewalk every 2–3 years will extend its life and keep it looking clean and professional.
Can I Use Salt On My Concrete Sidewalk?
We do not recommend using salt or de-icing chemicals on your concrete sidewalk — especially during the first winter after installation.
Salt can accelerate the freeze-thaw cycle, leading to surface scaling, flaking, and long-term damage, even on properly finished concrete.
If you need traction during icy conditions, we recommend:
-
Clean sand
-
Non-corrosive, concrete-safe de-icers labeled safe for new concrete
Protecting your sidewalk in its first year is especially important. We’ll provide you with aftercare instructions to help maintain its strength and appearance through winter.
Do You Do The Base Prep For My Sidewalk?
Bulldog Concrete does not currently perform excavation or base prep in-house, but we work closely with a trusted local subcontractor to provide these services when needed.
If your project requires excavation, grading, or gravel base installation, we can coordinate those steps on your behalf to ensure everything is prepped correctly before we pour. Already working with your own contractor? No problem — we’re happy to collaborate and step in once the site is ready.
A solid, well-prepared base is key to a long-lasting sidewalk, and we’ll make sure it’s done right.
Do You Set Up The Forms?
Yes — formwork is included in all of our concrete sidewalk installations.
We take care of setting up all forms to ensure your sidewalk is properly shaped, aligned, and graded for drainage and durability.
Whether it’s a straight path, a curved layout, or a more complex design, our team ensures the forms are secure, accurate, and ready for a clean pour.
